چکیده

With the arrival of km3 volume scale neutrino detectors the chances to detect the first astronomical sources of TeV neutrinos will be dramatically increased. While the theoretical estimates of the neutrino fluxes contain large uncertainties, we can formulate the conditions for the detectability of certain neutrino sources phenomenologically. In fact, since most galactic neutrino sources are transparent for TeV γ-rays, their detectability implies a minimum flux of the accompanying γ-rays. For a typical energy-dependence of detection areas of km3 volume neutrino detectors, we obtain the quantitative condition Iγ(20 TeV) > 2 × 10−15 ph/cm2s, that thanks to the normalization of the γ-ray spectrum at 20 TeV appears to be quite robust, i.e. almost independent of the shape of energy spectrum of neutrinos. We remark that this condition is satisfied by the young supernova remnants RX J1713.7-3946 and RX J0852.0-4622 (Vela Jr) two of the strongest galactic γ-ray sources. The preliminary condition for the detectability of high energy neutrinos is that the bulk of γ-rays has a hadronic origin: A new way to test this hypothesis for RX J1713.7-3946 is proposed. Finally, we assess the relevance of a neutrino detector located in the Northern Hemisphere for the search for galactic neutrino sources. In particular, we argue that if the TeV neutrino sources correlate with the galactic mass distribution, the probability that some of them will be observed by a detector in the Mediterranean Sea is larger by a factor of 1.4-2.9 compared to the one of IceCube.

Detectable neutrino fluxes due to enhanced cosmic ray densities in the Galactic Center region

We examine in detail the detectability of a signal of diffuse high energy neutrinos produced in the Milky Way by the interaction of cosmic rays (CRs) with the interstellar medium (ISM). We show that highly inhomogeneous galactic CR densities arise naturally from large scale drift effects and the inhomogeneous distribution of CR sources. In particular, the CR density in the Galactic Center regio...

Galactic sources of high energy neutrinos

The undisputed galactic origin of cosmic rays at energies below the so-called knee around 10eV implies an existence of a nonthemal population of galactic objects which effectively accelerate protons and nuclei to TeV-PeV energies. The distinct signatures of these cosmic accelerators are high energy neutrinos and γ-rays produced through hadronic interactions. While γ-rays can be produced also by...

Constraining Galactic Neutrino Production in pγ Interactions with Cosmic Ray Electron and Positron Spectra

High energy neutrinos are expected to be produced inside astrophysical sources of cosmic rays e.g. supernova remnants, pulsar wind nebulae, active galactic nuclei and gamma-ray bursts by the decay of charged pions produced in pγ and pp interactions. Although pp interactions may be the dominant mechanism in our Galaxy, it is unclear how important pγ process is for neutrino production. We show th...

Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray and Neutrino Observations

Recent measurements of ultra-high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos are reviewed. With several new large scale observatories nearing completion or becoming fully operational only very recently, a large body of high quality and high statistics data is growing up now. Already these first data have started to open up a new window to the high energy Universe giving us first direct clues about the or...

Galactic discrete sources of high energy neutrinos

We review recently developed models of galactic discrete sources of high energy neutrinos. Some of them are based on a simple rescaling of the TeV γ-ray fluxes from recently detected galactic sources, such as, shelltype supernova remnants or pulsar wind nebulae. Others present detailed and originally performed modeling of processes occurring close to compact objects, i.e. neutron stars and low ...
